Cat Mailloux - Tears/Tears
This written work is a collaboration between sisters Cat Mailloux and Lindsay Mailloux. The essay, passed between them, meditates on the words tears/tear. Cat is a visual artist, Lindsay is a pharmacist.
The red felt included in this work is hand-dyed with madder root and hand-made from raw roving wool.
The process of felting requires an immediate and insistent gesture of the hand and body— matting, rubbing, and compressing loose wool fibers together with soap and water to create a sturdy textile. It is the oldest form of fabric known to mankind, pre-dating weaving and knitting, and is incredibly resilient. It is chaos, compressed. In opposition to a woven fabric, felt has no warp or weft, and is thus quite difficult to tear.
